The survivor

The 993-model Carrera will appeal to both your head and your heart. Of all the 911s, suggests Peter Morgan, this is the one that will set your heart racing, and the one that you will never want to sell. Ever!

In 1993 there was an extraordinary party in Stuttgart to celebrate the 911`s 30th anniversary. Fans of the car came from literally all over the world, and cherished Porsches from as far afield as Japan, California and South Africa filed into a huge display of cars in the courtyard of the grand old Schloss Ludwigsburg.

In the packed courtyard you could barely turn without bumping into a well-known face –be it frail-looking Ferry Porsche, his sister Louise, or a beaming Huschke von Hahnstein and numerous other pioneers from the early days. Here were all the engineering and motorsport legends, too – Hensler, Mezger, Falk, Singer –who has contributed so much to the Porsche legend that had drawn everyone together. It was an amazing statement of faith in Porsche – the man and the company – an it came at a time when the latter needed it most. Hard to believe today, but just 10 years ago – alittle over 500 working weeks – Porsche was on ist uppers, virtually bankrupt. Despite numerous overtures from wealthy auto industry giants to “save” it from oblivion, Porsche was doggedly clinging to an unshakeable self-belief that the future was within its own grasp.

I remember at one point a fresh-faced 30-something by the name of Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking standing in front of all these luminaries (and we visitors), and saying that Porsche was not going down, that it was not selling out and, indeed, that it was on the threshold of a new era.
